7th Grade Science News Current Events Assignment
Your first assignment is to bring to class a recent NEWS article from a newspaper, magazine or from the internet. Recent, meaning, published within the past month or two. What kind of article is a science news article, you ask? Well, any topic that has to do with nature, inventions, discoveries, health, conservation, fossils, agriculture, electronics (how they work), etc. is a SCIENCE news article.
Do you like sports medicine? OK, bring it. How about weather (global warming, hurricanes, tornadoes, heatwaves, lightning?) Also science, so bring it. Do you think it's cool when new species are discovered near the ocean floor? Definitely science, so bring it. Spaceships, planets, meteors? Awesome, bring it! Mars Rover news? Sure, you can bring that also.
Most topics will have some relationship to science in some way. Sports team scores do not qualify, sorry. We will be analyzing our articles for facts, writing style, details, research, scientific validity (meaning how strong the evidence is) and for new questions it raises.
Your best source of articles is really the local newspaper. Make sure you write down the name of the newspaper (source) and the date of printing. If you prefer to find an article on the internet, you can try any news website, such as sciencenewsforkids.com or CNN.com. You must print the entire article. Never cut and paste sections onto a new document without the source details.
TIP: When printing an internet article, make sure you print the retrieval information at the bottom of the page. This includes the date you printed it and the website URL (http address).
